Blue glass is typically produced by adding cobalt oxide, a highly potent colorant that requires only a few parts per million to achieve a light blue shade, such as that commonly seen in certain bottled waters. On the other hand, a light blue-green glass can be created by using only iron and carbon while excluding sulfur, which leads to a reduced blue glass. However, producing this reduced blue glass is rare due to the greater complexity involved in controlling the color and the challenges in finishing the glass properly. Most colored glasses are manufactured using glass tanks, the same technique employed for making flint glass. In this process, colorants are typically added to the forehearth, which is a brick-lined channel that carries molten glass from the tank to the forming machine in a flint glass furnace. Introducing colorants at this stage facilitates the development of oxidized colors in the glass. The forehearth method enables precise control over the color and quality of the final product.
